How can we help?
Step-by-step guides and answers for everything in Expanager.
Getting started
What should I do first?
- Open Expanager and follow the welcome screens. You can pick your currency, your home screen and whether to use Advanced Mode (see Advanced mode).
- Add your wallets: cash, bank accounts and cards, on the Wallets tab.
- Tap + on the main screen to add your first expense.
- Optional: turn on bank SMS reading, set a budget, and set up backup.
The app shows sample data. How do I remove it?
Sample entries help you explore the app. To remove them and start with a clean account, go to ⋮ → Settings → Miscellaneous → Start fresh (remove sample data).
What's the difference between an account and a wallet?
An account is a separate set of books, for example “Personal”, “Family” or “Business”. Each account has its own entries, categories, budgets and reports.
A wallet (payment mode) is where the money is inside an account: cash, a bank account, a credit card or an e-wallet. Every entry records which wallet it was paid from or received into.
How do I create and switch between accounts?
- Create: ⋮ → Accounts → Add New Account. Once you have more than one account, Expanager opens on the Select Account screen, and its ⋮ → Add New Account adds more.
- Switch: tap the back arrow next to the account name on the main screen to return to Select Account, then tap the account you want.
- Edit or delete: ⋮ → Add/Edit Accounts on the Select Account screen (or ⋮ → Accounts → Edit Account when you have one account).
The Select Account screen also shows the grand total across all your accounts.
Adding and managing entries
How do I add an expense or income?
- Tap + on the main screen.
- Choose Expense or Income at the top.
- Pick a Category (and subcategory, if you use them).
- Enter the Amount. The keypad is a calculator, so you can type sums like 120+45.
- Optionally add a note, change the date and time, pick a Payment Mode (wallet) and add Tags (see adding tags).
- Optionally tap More … for the extra fields: Payee or Payer, Status, and linking the entry to a goal or loan.
- Tap Save.
You can also add entries from the Expense and Income tabs, or from a home-screen widget.
How do I attach a receipt or document?
On the add or edit screen, tap the camera icon next to the date. Take a photo or choose an image or document. You can attach several files to one entry, and tap a thumbnail to view it.
To see every attachment in one place, go to ⋮ → Settings → Configurations → Bill Images.
Can I add entries by voice?
Yes. Tap the mic button on the main screen and say the entry, including the amount and what it was for. Expanager turns what you say into an entry.
If you don't see the mic, turn on ⋮ → Settings → General Settings → Show mic icon in overview. There's also a voice widget for your home screen.
How do I split one bill across several categories?
On the add screen, tap Split next to Category. Add a line for each category with its amount. Expanager saves them as linked parts of one entry, and shows them joined in your lists.
Can I enter a negative amount for an expense or income?
Yes. Both expenses and income accept negative amounts. On the add screen, tap − on the keypad first, then type the amount (for example −500).
A negative entry reduces the total for its type instead of adding to the other side:
- A negative expense lowers your expense total. Use it for refunds, cashback or money returned to you for something you'd recorded as an expense.
- A negative income lowers your income total. Use it to correct or reverse income, such as a salary deduction or a payment that bounced.
Negative amounts work in split entries and recurring entries too, and appear with their sign in charts, Excel and PDF reports.
Example: a deposit you get back. Say you pay a ₹5,00,000 security deposit or booking margin and later get it back. Recording the refund as income would inflate your income and turnover. Instead:
- Record the payment as an expense of 5,00,000, for example in a “Deposits” category.
- When it comes back, record a negative expense of −5,00,000 in the same category.
The two cancel out, so your income stays untouched and the Deposits category shows what is still outstanding. Record any profit as income and any loss as an expense, so only the real gain or loss shows in your reports.
How do I edit, delete or pin an entry?
Tap an entry to open its details, then use the edit or delete buttons. Long-press an entry in a list for more actions.
Pin entries you want to find again quickly, such as a big purchase with a warranty or a payment you need to follow up. Pinned entries are listed under ⋮ → Pinned Transactions.
How do I find an entry?
Tap Search on the main screen and type what you're looking for, such as a note, amount, category or payee.
How do I add, edit or reorder categories?
Go to ⋮ → Settings → Configurations, then Add/Edit Expense Categories or Add/Edit Income Categories. You can rename categories, change their icons and add new ones.
To use subcategories (for example Food → Restaurant), turn on Enable Subcategories on the same screen.
What are the Daily, Monthly, Calendar and other views?
The main screen can show your entries in different ways. Use the view switcher at the top of the Overview to choose a recent list, monthly groups, a calendar, or a custom period. The calendar shows each day's spending so you can tap a date to see its entries.
To choose which screen Expanager opens on, go to ⋮ → Settings → General Settings → Start screen.
Tags, payees and notes
Extra labels that let you slice your spending in ways categories can't.
What are tags and when should I use them?
A category says what the money was for (Food, Transport). A tag is an extra label you can add to any entry, across categories, for example Goa trip, Wedding, Work expense or Reimbursable. An entry can have several tags.
Tags answer questions like “How much did the whole trip cost?”, when the spending is spread over food, hotels and transport.
How do I add tags to an entry?
- On the add or edit screen, tap + under Tags.
- Type a new tag in Enter tag, or tap one of your Recently used tags.
- Tap Add. Add as many tags as you like, then save the entry.
Recurring and future entries can have tags too, so every entry they add is tagged automatically.
How does Tag Analysis work?
Tag Analysis shows the entries you've tagged, so tag your entries as you add them first (see How do I add tags to an entry?). Entries without tags don't appear here.
- Open ⋮ → Analysis → Tag Analysis.
- Select one or more tags.
- Choose Monthly, Yearly or All Years, and switch between Expense and Income.
You'll see the total and balance for those tags over time, a category split showing which categories the tagged entries fall into, and stats such as the number of transactions, how long the tag has been used, and average spending per day and per month. Tap through to see the individual entries.Premium
How do I rename or delete a tag?
In Tag Analysis, long-press the tag. Choose Edit tag name to rename it everywhere it's used, or delete it with Delete tag from transactions. Deleting removes the tag from your entries; the entries themselves are kept.
What are payee, payer and status?
- Payee: who you paid, on an expense, for example a shop, landlord or online store.
- Payer: who paid you, on an income, for example your employer, a client or a bank.
- Status: where the entry stands, for example Cleared, Uncleared, Reconciled or Complete. You can add your own statuses.
They're optional. Use them if you want to know how much you spend with one shop, or which entries still need checking.
How do I add a payee, payer or status to an entry?
- On the add or edit screen, tap More … to show the extra fields.
- Tap Payee (for expenses) or Payer (for income), or Status.
- Search the list, or type a new name and tap Add.
In the list, tap a name to rename it, drag the handle to reorder, or use the bin to delete it.
How does Payee/Payer Analysis work?
Payee/Payer Analysis shows the entries that have a payee or payer, so add one under More … when you add an entry (see How do I add a payee, payer or status?). Entries without one don't appear here.
Open ⋮ → Analysis → Payee/Payer Analysis, select one or more payees or payers, and choose Monthly, Yearly or All Years. You'll see how much went to (or came from) each one over time. You can also filter by Transaction status, for example to see only uncleared entries.Premium
What is the Notes feature?
⋮ → Notes is a simple notebook inside Expanager for things like shopping lists, bills to pay or account details you don't want to forget.
- Tap + and choose Text or Checklist.
- Give the note a colour, Pin important notes to the top, and switch between List view and Grid view.
- Open a note to Share, copy or delete it.
Notes stay on your phone and are included in your backups. Searching notes is part of Premium.Premium
Expanager Advanced mode and transfers
Advanced mode is for people who want to move money between their separate accounts and see it reflected in both.
What is Expanager Advanced mode?
Expanager has two modes:
- Standard (default): each account is tracked on its own. Totals show Expense and Income.
- Advanced: adds inter-account transfers. A Transfers tab appears in the bottom bar, and totals are shown as Debits and Credits, so money moved between accounts is counted correctly.
Use Advanced mode if you keep, for example, a Personal and a Business account and move money between them.
How do I turn Advanced mode on or off?
Go to ⋮ → Settings → Configurations → Mode → Expanager Advanced and switch it on or off. You can also choose it on the welcome screens when you first open the app.
Your entries aren't changed when you switch. Only the layout and the way totals are labelled change.
How do I record a transfer?
- Tap + and choose Transfers at the top of the add screen.
- Choose where the money comes from and where it goes. In Advanced mode, this can be a wallet in another account.
- Enter the amount and save.
Expanager records the money leaving one side and arriving on the other, so balances stay right on both. Moving money between your own wallets, such as paying a credit card bill from your bank account, is a transfer too, not an expense.
Recurring and future entries
Let regular bills and income add themselves, and schedule one-off payments ahead of time.
How do recurring entries work?
A recurring entry is a template, for example “Rent, 1,200, every month on the 1st”. On each due date, Expanager adds a normal entry for you automatically, even if you don't open the app. It can also remind you before it does.
The entries it adds are regular entries: you can edit or delete any one of them without affecting the others.
How do I create a recurring entry?
- Go to ⋮ → Recurring/Future Entries → Recurring Expense/Income (or Settings → Configurations → Add/Edit Recurring Entries).
- Tap + (Add New Recurring Entry).
- Choose Expense or Income, then the category, amount and an optional note.
- Pick the start date and time.
- Tap the frequency to open Set Frequency: Every Day, Every Week, Every Month, Every Year or Custom (for example every 2 weeks or every 3 months).
- Set Installments: Until Cancellation to keep going, or a number of times (for example 12 payments for a phone plan).
- Choose the Payment Mode and Tags if you want.
- Set a Reminder: Don't Show, On Same Day or On Previous Day, and the time.
- Tap Save.
How do I pause, restart, edit or delete a recurring entry?
Open ⋮ → Recurring/Future Entries → Recurring Expense/Income and tap the entry.
- Pause Entry stops new entries from being added until you choose Restart Entry.
- Edit changes future entries. Entries already added stay as they are.
- Delete removes the recurring entry. Entries it already added are kept.
The list shows how many instalments are done and when the next one is due, with monthly and yearly totals.
How do I schedule a one-off future payment?
Use ⋮ → Recurring/Future Entries → Future Expense/Income, tap +, and fill it in like a normal entry with a future date. It's added automatically on that date, with an optional reminder. Past ones are listed under Expired Entries.
Can I see everything that's coming up?
Yes. ⋮ → Recurring/Future Entries → Upcoming transactions shows all recurring and future entries due soon, in date order.Premium
A recurring entry wasn't added or I didn't get the reminder
Android needs to let Expanager run on schedule:
- Allow Alarms & reminders for Expanager when the app asks, or in Android Settings → Apps → Expanager.
- Allow notifications: ⋮ → Settings → Reminders → Enable Notifications.
- In Android Settings → Apps → Expanager → Battery, choose Unrestricted (or turn off battery optimisation). Some phones stop scheduled apps to save power.
Missed entries are added the next time Expanager runs.
Budgets
A budget is a monthly spending limit, so you can see early in the month whether you're on track.
What is a budget and how does it work?
A budget sets how much you want to spend on a category each month, for example Food 8,000. As you add expenses, Expanager shows how much of it you've used, what's left, and whether you're likely to go over before the month ends.
- Budgets are monthly. Each month starts fresh with the full amount; money you didn't spend doesn't move into the next month's budget.
- The yearly view multiplies the monthly budget by 12.
- Tap a budget to see its spending history and to give one month a different amount, for example a higher food budget in a festival month.
- Budgets only count expenses. Income doesn't change them.
How do I set a budget?
- Open ⋮ → Budget.
- Tap + (Add Budget).
- Choose Single category budget, pick the category and enter the amount.
- Tap OK.
A Multi category budget covers several categories with one limit, for example “Going out” for Restaurants, Movies and Bars.Premium
How do budget warnings work?
Expanager compares how fast you're spending with how much of the month is left. Each budget shows what's Remaining, your Daily Budget Left, and a message such as “At the current rate of spending, you will overshoot your budget”, so you can slow down early.
To see your budget while adding an expense, turn on Settings → General Settings → Show budget info while adding expense.
Does an unused budget carry over to next month?
No. Each month's budget starts again at the full amount, whatever you spent the month before.
If you want your leftover money (income minus expenses) to show in the next month's balance, that's a separate setting. See Carry forward.
Carry forward
What is carry forward?
Carry forward moves the remaining balance (income minus expenses) from one period into the next. With it on, the totals you see are running balances instead of standalone figures:
- A month's balance includes everything left over from the months before it.
- The yearly balance on the Overview includes what was left over from previous years. Expanager also shows the overall balance next to it.
- When you open a month, its entries start from the balance brought forward from earlier months.
With it off, each month and year shows only its own income and expenses.
How do I turn carry forward on or off?
Go to ⋮ → Settings → General Settings → Carry forward. The setting only changes how balances are shown, so you can switch it on or off at any time without changing your entries.
When should I use carry forward?
Turn it on if you want to see how much money you actually have, like a bank balance that keeps going from month to month. Leave it off if you want to judge each month on its own, for example to check whether you spent less than you earned this month.
If you use your own financial year (see financial year), the yearly carry-over follows it.
Goals and loans
What's the difference between a budget, a goal and a loan?
- Budget: a limit on how much you spend each month, for example Food 8,000 a month. See Budgets.
- Goal: an amount you're working towards, for example saving 50,000 for a holiday or paying off a car. You link entries to it and watch your progress.
- Loan: money you owe someone or someone owes you, with what's been repaid and what's left.
How do goals work?
A goal tracks progress towards an amount. When you tap + in ⋮ → Goals, choose the type:
- Savings Goal: for building up money, for example a holiday or an emergency fund. Link income entries (money you set aside) to it.
- Expense Goal: for paying something off, for example a car or a course paid in instalments. Link expense entries (each payment) to it.
Then give the goal a name, the amount, a start date and an end date (or leave it as Forever if there's no deadline). With an end date, Expanager shows how much you need each day or month, for example “Save 9.00/day in the next 365 days.”
To count an entry towards a goal, open the entry's add or edit screen, tap More … and pick the goal under Link to a goal. Your first goal is free; more goals and linking entries need Premium.Premium
How do I track a loan or money I lent?
- Open ⋮ → Loans and tap +.
- Choose Borrowed (you owe) or Lent (you get money back), then the amount and dates.
- Add payments as they happen. Expanager shows what's left and how much to pay or collect each day or month.
Your first loan is free; more loans need Premium. You can also link an expense or income entry to a loan from its add or edit screen, under More …: an expense pays a loan back, and an income collects money you lent. This works for recurring entries too, so regular repayments update the loan automatically.Premium
Bank SMS and notifications
How do I turn on automatic entries from bank SMS?
- Go to ⋮ → Settings → Transaction Helpers → SMS based transaction helper.
- Turn on Enable SMS Transaction Helper and allow SMS access when Android asks.
- Optional: tap Rescan to look through recent messages.
When a bank or wallet SMS about a payment arrives, Expanager notifies you with the amount, merchant and a suggested category. Tap Add to save it or Cancel to ignore it. Found payments are also listed on the Transaction Helpers screen.
Can Expanager read notifications from banking apps?
Yes. Under ⋮ → Settings → Transaction Helpers, turn on the Notification based transaction helper and give Expanager notification access. It detects payments from banking and payment app notifications, on your phone only.
An SMS wasn't detected, or got the wrong category
- Check SMS permission is allowed for Expanager in Android Settings → Apps → Expanager → Permissions.
- Open Transaction Helpers → Helper Settings to add keywords for your bank, and set auto categories and notes for merchants.
- Expanager learns from you: the note and category you use for a merchant are suggested next time.
If a bank's format still isn't recognised, email us an example message with personal details removed, and we'll add support.
Wallets and credit cards
How do I add a bank account, card or e-wallet?
Open the Wallets tab and tap Add Payment Modes. Choose the type (cash, bank account, credit card, e-wallet or your own type), enter a name and an initial balance. For credit cards you can add the card limit and due date.
The Initial Balance is what's in the wallet when you start using Expanager, for example your bank balance today. Every entry is added to or taken from it, so set it right and the wallet's balance will match your bank. To change it later, tap the wallet and use the edit icon next to Initial Balance.
With a due date set, Expanager reminds you before a card bill is due. Wallets are grouped by type with a subtotal for each group.
How do I see the history of one wallet?
Tap a wallet on the Wallets tab to see its entries and balance over time. Its ⋮ menu has Reconcile statement, Edit and Delete.
Insights and reports
Where are charts and insights?
Open the Statistics tab for category breakdowns, monthly and yearly trends, the daily spending heatmap and what changed since last month. Tap a category to drill in.
The ⋮ → Analysis menu has Tag Analysis, Payee/Payer Analysis and Investment Analysis.Premium
How do I export to Excel or PDF?
Go to ⋮ → Settings → Reports and choose Export data as Excel spreadsheet or Export data as PDF. Pick the period and, for PDFs, options such as running balance, graphs and landscape mode.
Custom reports lets you build a report with your own filters, such as one category or payment mode.
Can I use my own financial year?
Yes. Set it in ⋮ → Settings → Configurations → Edit Financial Year Start. Yearly totals, budgets and reports then follow your financial year.
Investments and retirement
How do I track money I invest?
- Record investments as expenses in a category such as Investments, Mutual funds or Stocks.
- Mark that category as an investment: open ⋮ → Settings → Configurations → Add/Edit Expense Categories, edit the category, and tick Category is of type INVESTMENT.
Money you invest isn't really spent, so charts and insights can then leave it out: look for the option to exclude categories of type INVESTMENT on the Statistics and Insights screens.
What does Investment Analysis show?
Open ⋮ → Analysis → Investment Analysis. For the period you pick (monthly, yearly, all years or custom dates) it shows:
- your Total Investment and the percentage of income invested, with a guide (aim for 10–20%)
- an investment timeline: tap a bar to see that period's investments
- your best month and year, averages, and a comparison with the previous period
- a breakdown by investment category. Long-press a category to see its subcategories.
It only counts categories marked as INVESTMENT (see above).Premium
How does the Retirement Planner work?
Open ⋮ → Retirement Planner. It estimates when you could retire, based on what you have, what you save and what you spend.Premium
- Your details: enter your current assets (investments, savings and others such as property, gold or pension funds), your yearly expenses, your monthly contribution to savings and investments, and optionally your year of birth. Values from your Expanager accounts are filled in where possible.
- Future events: add one-time income (such as a house sale), one-time expenses (such as education) or a yearly income from a given year (such as a pension). Enter amounts in today's money; they're adjusted for inflation.
- Assumptions: set the investment return, savings return, inflation, safe withdrawal rate and how much you expect to spend in retirement.
The planner shows the year you could retire, the amount you'd need (the required corpus), how long your money would last, and how much more to invest each month to retire by a year you choose. It's an estimate to help you plan, not financial advice.
Import and statement reconciliation
How do I import entries from a CSV or Excel file?
- Export your data from your bank, spreadsheet or old app as a CSV, XLS or XLSX file.
- In Expanager, go to ⋮ → Settings → Backup and Restore → Import Data and choose the file.
- Pick the Sheet (for Excel files) and the account to Import into.
- Match the columns: Date and Amount are required. You can also match Type, Category, Subcategory, Note, Payment mode, Tags, Payee and Payer. If the file has separate Income and Expense columns, match those instead of Amount.
- Choose the Date style and how to treat amounts without a type (for example “Negative is expense, positive is income”).
- Check the summary and tap Import.
Entries already in the app are skipped, and new categories and payment modes are created for you. Transfers aren't imported. If you're not sure of the format, the import screen can save a sample file to start from.
What does the import screen check before importing?
Before anything is added, Expanager shows a summary:
- how many entries are ready to import
- how many rows will be skipped, and why (for example no date, a date it can't read, no amount, an amount of zero, or a transfer)
- how many are already in the app, so importing the same file twice doesn't create duplicates
- the new categories, subcategories and payment modes it will create
If the numbers look wrong, go back and change the column matching or the date style. If the import fails, nothing is added.
Tips for importing from a bank or another app
- Bank statements: download the statement as CSV or Excel from your bank's website. Many banks put debits and credits in separate columns; match them to Expense (debit) and Income (credit).
- One amount column with + and −: choose Negative is expense, positive is income.
- All rows are spending (for example a card statement): choose All are expenses.
- Dates: if dates come out wrong (day and month swapped), change the Date style.
- Several accounts: import each file into the right account with Import into.
- Remove extra rows such as totals or headers in the middle of the file. They'd be skipped, but cleaner files give a clearer summary.
How do I reconcile with a bank or card statement?
Reconciling checks your entries against your bank's statement. It finds payments you forgot to add, entries added twice and amounts that don't match, so your balances stay right.
- Open ⋮ → Reconcile statement, or open a wallet and choose ⋮ → Reconcile statement.
- Tap Add statement and choose your statement file: PDF, Excel or CSV. Password-protected PDFs work too.
- Check the period and payment modes. Expanager compares the statement with your entries.
- Review the three lists: Matched, Only on statement (missing from Expanager, add them with one tap) and Only in Expanager (check these).
- Mark matched entries as reconciled.
Statements are read on your phone and aren't uploaded anywhere.Premium
Currencies and number format
How do I change my currency or number format?
Go to ⋮ → Settings → Configurations → Manage Currency → Primary Currency. You can change the currency symbol, whether it appears before or after the amount, the number format (for example 1,000,000 or 10,00,000) and whether to show decimals. A preview shows how amounts will look.
How do I record spending in another currency?
Use secondary currencies when you spend or earn in a currency other than your main one, for example on a trip abroad, with a foreign-currency card, or for income paid in dollars.
- Go to ⋮ → Settings → Configurations → Manage Currency → Secondary Currencies and tap + to add a currency.
- Tap Fetch Rate for today's exchange rate, or Set Manually.
- When adding an entry, tap the currency symbol next to the amount and pick the currency.
Totals and reports convert everything to your primary currency. You can't change the primary currency while you have entries in secondary currencies.
Backup, restore and moving phones
Which backup should I use?
| Option | What it does | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Export and share (free) | Saves a backup file that you send or store wherever you like. | Moving phones, keeping a copy in your own cloud storage or email. |
| Local auto backup (free) | Keeps a daily safety copy in the phone's Downloads folder. | Undoing a mistake, such as deleted entries. It won't help if the phone is lost. |
| Google Drive auto backup (Premium) | Backs up data and bill images to your Google Drive every day. | Hands-off protection, including if the phone is lost or broken. |
The safest setup is Google Drive auto backup, or local auto backup plus an exported file kept somewhere off the phone.
How do I back up my data?
Go to ⋮ → Settings → Backup and Restore → Manual & Local Backup:
- Export and share creates a backup file (it ends in .exapp) and lets you save or send it, for example to email, cloud storage or another device.
- Enable local auto backup keeps a daily safety copy in your phone's Downloads folder. Create copy now makes one immediately. The screen shows when the last copy was made.
- Bill images aren't inside the data file. Use the Bill images option on the same screen to save them as well.
How does Google Drive backup work?
- Go to ⋮ → Settings → Backup and Restore → Auto Backup/Restore - Google Drive.
- Sign in with your Google account and allow access to Google Drive.
- Turn on Enable Auto Backup and choose the Backup time. Expanager then backs up every day at that time.
- Tap Back up now whenever you want an extra backup. The screen shows the date of the Last Google Drive backup.
Your data and bill images go to a private app folder in your own Google Drive. They don't use the rest of your Drive, other apps can't see them, and we can't see them either. If your Drive is full, the backup fails and the app tells you.Premium
What's included in a backup?
A backup contains everything in Expanager: all your accounts, entries, categories, payment modes, budgets, recurring and future entries, goals, loans, tags, payees, notes and your app settings. Google Drive backups also include your bill images; with a backup file, export the bill images separately.
Your app lock passcode and your Premium purchase aren't part of the backup. Premium comes back automatically through Google Play.
What happens when I restore a backup?
- Choose Restore from file (Manual & Local Backup) or Restore from Google Drive, then pick the backup.
- Expanager shows the backup's details: where it's from, when it was created, its size, and how many accounts and transactions it holds.
- Tap Restore now and confirm Replace.
When it's done, Expanager restarts. From Google Drive, bill images then download in the background; you can also use Restore images only to fetch just the images. If a restore fails, your existing data is kept.
How do I move to a new phone?
With a backup file (free):
- On the old phone: Settings → Backup and Restore → Manual & Local Backup → Export and share, and send the file to yourself.
- On the new phone: install Expanager, open the same screen and choose Restore from file.
With Google Drive (Premium): back up on the old phone, then on the new phone sign in to the same Google account under Auto Backup/Restore - Google Drive and restore. Bill images are restored too.
Can I use Expanager on my computer?
Yes, with PC Manager. Connect your phone and computer to the same Wi-Fi network, then:
- Open ⋮ → PC Manager (on the Select Account screen if you have several accounts).
- Expanager shows a notification, “PC Manager Running”, with the address to open. Tap Copy URL if you need it.
- Type that address into your computer's browser.
- When you're done, tap Stop Server in the notification.
Your data goes straight from your phone to your computer over your own network. It doesn't pass through the internet or our servers.
Security and personalising
How do I lock the app?
Go to ⋮ → Settings → App Lock. Turn on Passcode Required and set a passcode, then turn on Enable Biometrics/FingerPrint if your phone supports it.
To hide amounts from people looking over your shoulder, turn on Settings → General Settings → Tap to blur/reveal amounts.
How do I change the theme or colours?
Go to ⋮ → Settings → Themes. Choose System, Light or Dark under Appearance, and pick an Accent color.
How do I change the language?
Go to ⋮ → Settings → General Settings → Select language. Expanager is available in 21 languages.
Can Expanager remind me to add my expenses?
Yes. Go to ⋮ → Settings → Reminders, turn on Daily Reminder and choose the time.
Which home-screen widgets are there?
Long-press your home screen, tap Widgets, and find Expanager. There are widgets to add an entry, add an entry by voice, see an account summary, and see new bank SMS payments to add.
What else can I change in General Settings?
⋮ → Settings → General Settings includes the start screen, start day of the week, 24-hour time, showing hidden accounts, automatic capitalisation in notes, the overview mic button and “Press back again to exit the app”.
How do I delete all my data?
Go to ⋮ → Settings → Miscellaneous → Clear All Data. You'll be asked to type DELETE to confirm. This permanently removes everything in Expanager on this phone, so choose Back up first if you might want it later.
Backups already in your Google Drive aren't affected. To delete those, open Google Drive on the web → Settings → Manage apps → Expanager → Delete hidden app data.
Troubleshooting and other questions
My balance looks wrong
- Check the period you're looking at (month, year or all time) at the top of the screen.
- Check Settings → General Settings → Carry forward. With it on, last month's remaining balance is included.
- Check each wallet's initial balance on the Wallets tab.
- Payments between your own wallets should be transfers, not expenses. See How do I record a transfer?
Restore didn't work
- Make sure you picked an Expanager backup file (it ends in .exapp).
- For Google Drive, sign in with the same Google account you backed up with.
- Update Expanager to the latest version from Google Play, and try again.
Still stuck? Email us and we'll help you get your data back.
Does Expanager work offline?
Yes, completely. You only need internet for Google Drive backup, exchange rates and purchases.
Is my financial data safe?
