10 best expense tracker apps in India (2026), compared honestly
The right expense tracker in India is the one that logs your UPI and card spending without you typing it, and doesn't try to sell you a loan while it's at it. Here are the ten Android apps worth considering in 2026, what each one actually does, what it costs, and who it suits. Outside India? See the best budget apps for Android in the US.
- Best overall for India: Expanager. Logs UPI and card spending from bank SMS and notifications, no ads, free.
- Best for detailed finances and projections: Bluecoins.
- Best if you also use an iPhone: FinArt.
- Best for traditional bookkeeping: Money Manager.
- Best for travel and many currencies: Wallet by BudgetBakers.
- Best for splitting bills with friends: Splitwise.
How we compared them
- How spending gets in. In India most payments trigger a bank SMS or app notification, so an app that reads those saves the most effort. Manual-only apps rely on your discipline.
- Ads and loan upsells. A money app paid for by ads or credit products has a reason to use your spending data.
- Price. What's free, and what the paid version costs.
- Where your data lives. On your phone, or on the company's servers.

1. Expanager: best overall for automatic UPI tracking
Expanager reads the SMS your bank sends for every UPI payment, card spend and transfer, and the notifications from banking apps, and turns them into categorised expenses you confirm with a tap. Messages are read on the phone and never uploaded. There's no account, no bank login and no ads, and it works offline.
Beyond logging, it has monthly budgets with a daily limit and early warnings, recurring bills, credit card due dates, loans you've given or taken, savings goals, yearly insights, PDF and Excel reports, CSV and Excel import, and Hindi and Malayalam among 21 languages. Premium (₹30 a month, ₹300 a year or ₹850 once) adds Google Drive backup, multi-category budgets and statement reconciliation.
Not for you if you want the app to log in to your bank and pull balances itself, or you need an iPhone app. Expanager is Android only.
2. Bluecoins: best for detailed finances and projections
Bluecoins is the closest app to Expanager in approach. Its listing says it can "log transactions quickly via bank notifications or SMS", and its site says "no bank login, ever", with data kept on the device and backups to your own Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive. Where it goes further is analysis: "cash flow & net worth analysis, future income/expense projections" and reconciling "with bank records and credit-card statements". The free version shows ads; Premium is a one-time purchase, "never a subscription". Play India rating 4.3, 1M+ downloads.
Best for people who want net worth, projections and accounting-style detail and don't mind a busier interface.
3. FinArt: best if you also use an iPhone
FinArt tracks spending from transaction SMS, transaction emails and bank app notifications, and its listing says it "does not connect to your bank accounts" and needs no mandatory email or phone registration. A "Private Mode" keeps SMS and bank data off FinArt's servers, and backups go to your own Google Drive. It's ad-free and starts with a 5-day free trial, then a subscription. It also has an iPhone app, which most apps here don't. Play India rating 4.5, 1M+ downloads.
Best for households with both Android and iPhone, and people whose bank statements arrive by email.
4. Money Manager (Realbyte): best for traditional bookkeeping
Money Manager is one of the most popular trackers worldwide (10M+ downloads, 4.6 in India). It applies "double entry bookkeeping" and shows each card's payment amount and outstanding balance. Entry is manual, helped by recurring entries and bookmarks; its listing doesn't mention SMS. The free version has ads and limits you to 15 assets; the paid version removes both and adds editing on a PC. Full comparison with Expanager.
Best for people who like entering every transaction by hand and thinking in accounts.
5. Wallet by BudgetBakers: best for travel and many currencies
Wallet connects to bank accounts to sync transactions automatically, imports from your bank or spreadsheets, and keeps data synced to the cloud. Its strengths, in its own words, are "multicurrency accounts and worldwide bank coverage", ideal for "expats, international students and travelers", and sharing selected accounts with family. Its listing doesn't mention SMS reading or which Indian banks it connects to, so check that for your bank first. Highest Play rating on this list in India: 4.7.
Best for frequent travellers and people managing money in several countries.
6. axio (formerly Walnut): SMS tracking plus credit products
Walnut is now axio. Its listing calls it "an SMS-based money management app" that shows daily spending across bank accounts, cards and wallets and tracks utility bills. It's free with no ads; it earns from credit, which is a large part of the listing: axio Pay Later with EMIs from 3 to 36 months, personal loans at 14% to 35% a year, and fixed deposits. SMS access is also used for loan fraud checks. Play India rating 4.5, 10M+ downloads; last updated in July 2026. More on the Walnut to axio change.
Best for people who want SMS tracking and also plan to use Pay Later or a personal loan.
7. Expense Manager (Bishinews): best fully free option
Expense Manager is "100% FREE – full features, no hidden charges or in-app purchases", paid for by ads. It parses credit card and bank SMS, needs "no registration and internet access", and has an unusually long feature list: split transactions, PC access over the network, reports in HTML, CSV, Excel and PDF, even writing and printing cheques. Backups go to Dropbox, Google Drive or the SD card. Play India rating 4.4, 5M+ downloads.
Best for people who want every feature without paying and accept ads in return.
8. Monefy: best for the quickest manual entry
Monefy is built for speed: "it's done in one click, so you don't need to fill out anything except the amount", with home-screen widgets and sync so a partner's device mirrors your entries. Entry is manual only. No ads label on Play; extras are in-app purchases. Play India rating 4.0, 10M+ downloads.
Best for couples who want a simple shared log and don't need automatic tracking.
9. Money Lover: best for budget predictions
Money Lover's budget planner "predicts future spending based on your history". Premium adds multiple wallets, advanced budgets, reports, Google Sheets export, recurring bills and removes ads; automatic bank sync is a separate subscription, "available in various countries" without saying which. Entry is otherwise manual. Play India rating 4.2, 5M+ downloads.
Best for planners who like forecasts and don't mind paying to remove ads.
10. Splitwise: best for splitting with friends
Splitwise isn't a personal budget app, but it's the best tool for shared costs: trips, flatmates, dinners. Add who paid what in any currency, even offline, and it simplifies debts into the fewest repayments, with Paytm settlement in India. Spending-by-category budgeting is in Splitwise Pro. Play India rating 4.3, 10M+ downloads.
Best for group expenses. Pair it with one of the apps above for your own spending.
Not on this list, and why
- ET Money is now an investment app (mutual funds, SIPs, fixed deposits, loans against funds). Its current Play listing doesn't mention expense tracking.
- Moneyview is now a loan and UPI app. Its listing doesn't mention expense tracking either, even though its blog still ranks lists like this one.
- Goodbudget is a good envelope-budgeting app, but its bank sync covers US banks only and its Play India rating is 2.8.
Which one should you pick?

- You share costs with friends or flatmates: Splitwise, alongside a personal tracker.
